Dry Eye Treatments

Intense Pulsed Light

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive treatment for dry eye that targets inflammation and improves meibomian gland function. Managing meibomian glands is a common theme in dry eye therapy, as helps produce essential oils that keep your eyes hydrated.

IPL delivers precise pulses of light to the skin around the eyes that help:

  • Reduce inflamed and irregular blood vessels around the eyelids.

  • Light energy to reduce inflammatory markers that increase inflammation around the eyelids.

  • Boost natural oil production and enhance tear quality by managing meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

  • Enhance cellular photosensitivity to treat bacterial overgrowth or biofilm on the eyelids, which can cause an inflammatory response.

  • Rejuvenate the eyelids and the skin around them, promoting better function and tear production.

Radio Frequency

Radio Frequency (RF) is a non-invasive and comfortable  treatment for dry eye that uses controlled heat delivered through radiofrequency waves to stimulate and improve meibomian gland function. Meibomian glands produce meibom which is the oil the prevents your eyes from becoming dry. RF promotes better gland secretion, reduces inflammation, and enhances overall eyelid health. This therapy can provide long-lasting relief for patients suffering from dry eye and in some cases with out the need of additonal home therapies. Along with improving meibomian gland function for dry eye treatment the controlled heat from RF stimulates collagen production, which can tighten and rejuvenate the skin around the eyes.

Low Level Light Therapy

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses gentle light energy to improve dry eye symptoms by stimulating the natural healing processes of the eyelids and surrounding tissues. It uses red (along with other colors) and infared light to enhance cellular function, reduce inflammation, and promote better gland function. By doing so it helps the eyes release essential oils that help maintain hydration, particularly in cases of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a common cause of dry eye. The treatment is painless, safe, and effective, offering patients relief and improved ocular comfort with little to no downtime.

Zest (Blepharoexfoliation)

Inflammatory Lid Syndrome, is a huger part of dry eye. If the exterior housing of the eyes are dry and inflammed, more than likey the eyes themselves will be dry. Blepharitis is a common eye condition characterized by inflammation of the eyelid margins. Symptoms of blepharitis include redness, swelling, irritation, itching, flaking skin around the eyelid s, and a feeling of a foreign object in the eye. Some individuals may also experience crusting or a dandruff like apearance around the eyelashes, especially in the morning.

Blepharitis is linked to bacterial overgrowth or an excess of our normal flora and the presence of Demodex mites, microscopic organisms that naturally inhabit the skin and hair follicles.

Zest is an non-invasive in office lid debridement or lid cleaning. Think of it like a dental cleaning but for the eyelids. ZEST is ideal for treating both dry eye syndrome and blepharitis.

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs, also known as punctal occlusion, is an innovative and non-invasive treatment designed to alleviate symptoms of dry eye and ocular surface disease. The procedure involves inserting a small,  collagen device into the puncta of the lower or upper eyelids. By partially or completely blocking the tear drainage pathways, punctal plugs help retain tears on the ocular surface and prevent excessive tear drainage. Ultimately, this process increases moisture in the tear film and improves eye comfort.

Amniotic Membranes

Amniotic membranes (AM) are a biologic treatment option used for managing severe dry eye disease, specifically when associated with significant inflammation or corneal damage. Derived from the innermost layer of the placenta, they are rich in anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties. When applied to the eye, amniotic membranes promote healing by providing a protective barrier, reducing inflammation, and supporting tissue regeneration.

Typically, they are used in cases of severe keratitis, persistent epithelial defects, or non-healing corneal ulcers. They are available in various forms, such as cryopreserved or dehydrated, and can be placed on the eye for a few days to a week, depending on the condition and the type of membrane used. This treatment is minimally invasive and offers a safe and effective option for patients unresponsive to conventional therapies.

Currently, there are several dry eye treatments available in the form of eye drops and even in a nasal spray. These can be used as options for both long-term and short-term use. Many of these medications share a common mechanism by reducing or limiting the precursors that initiate the inflammatory process, providing relief for patients with chronic dry eye. In
